Khan Younis: Four Israeli soldiers were killed and five others were injured on Friday morning following an explosion at a building in the Bani Suheila neighborhood of Khan Younis, located in the southern Gaza Strip. The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli army identified the cause as a booby-trapped building that collapsed upon the soldiers.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Israeli military has identified two of the deceased soldiers as Sgt. Maj. (res.) Chen Gross, 33, from the Maglan commando unit, and Staff Sgt. Yoav Raver, 19, from the Yahalom combat engineering unit. The identities of the other two soldiers have not yet been released.
The daily Yedioth Ahronoth provided further details, stating that among the injured, a Maglan officer was severely wounded while four additional soldiers suffered moderate injuries. This incident forms part of a broader pattern of casualties over recent days; the Israeli army has reported seven soldiers killed and over ten injured, with some in critical condition.
The cumulative toll of the conflict has been significant. Since October 7, 2023, a total of 864 Israeli military personnel have been killed, with 422 fatalities occurring since the initiation of the ground offensive on October 27, 2023. Army records indicate that 5,930 officers and soldiers have been wounded to date, with 2,693 injuries occurring in ground battles within the Gaza Strip. These figures encompass casualties from Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and within Israel.
Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive in Gaza since October 2023, resulting in the deaths of nearly 54,700 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. Aid organizations have voiced concerns over the potential for famine among the over 2 million residents of the enclave.
The conflict has drawn international legal attention. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions against civilians in the enclave.
