Seoul: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has appointed six assistant special counsels to support a new investigation into insurrection charges against his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, concerning a failed martial law attempt last year, local media reported Friday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the appointments came after independent counsel Cho Eun-suk recommended eight assistant counsel nominees. This development follows President Lee's decision last week to appoint three independent counsels to probe several high-profile allegations against Yoon, including the failed martial law bid, corruption claims involving Yoon's wife, and his alleged intervention in an investigation into the death of South Korean Marine Corporal Chae Su-geun in 2023.

Furthermore, President Lee is expected to appoint four more assistant special counsels by Saturday to aid a separate investigation into allegations of influence peddling related to the investigation of Corporal Chae's drowning death. Chae had been conducting a search and rescue mission during heavy rain and flooding when the incident occurred, the agency reported.

Yoon, who was removed from office in April after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment, has denied all the allegations.
