Beirut: The municipality of Ayta al-Shaab in southern Lebanon came under Israeli artillery fire early Sunday. Lebanese media have yet to report any damage or casualties from the assault, which took place 2.22 kilometers (1.4 miles) northeast of the Israeli border.

According to Anadolu Agency, this incident is part of a broader conflict that began when Israel launched a wide-scale assault on Lebanon on October 8, 2023. The situation escalated into a full-scale war by September 23, 2024, resulting in the deaths of more than 4,000 people, injuries to over 17,000, and the displacement of nearly 1.4 million individuals.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November between Israel and Lebanon, Israeli forces have continued near-daily attacks in southern Lebanon. Israel claims these operations target Hezbollah's activities. However, Lebanese authorities report nearly 3,000 violations of the truce, including the deaths of at least 224 people and injuries to more than 500 since the agreement was signed.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israel was required to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26. However, the deadline was extended to February 18 after Tel Aviv refused to comply. Israel continues to maintain a military presence at five border outposts.
