Lagos: Nigeria's immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away in London at the age of 82. The family of the former leader announced his passing on Sunday, as stated by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu. According to Shehu, Buhari died in a clinic in London.

According to Anadolu Agency, Muhammadu Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, and played a significant role in Nigeria's political history. He was one of the key figures in the military coup of December 1983 that dismantled the Second Nigerian Republic. At the time, Buhari was serving as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Third Armored Division in Jos. After the successful coup, he appointed Tunde Idiagbon as Chief of General Staff, effectively making him the second in command. This coup marked the end of Nigeria's brief Second Republic, a democratic period that had been reestablished in 1979 after 13 years of military rule.

Before ascending to the presidency as a civilian, Buhari made several attempts to win the presidential seat. He ran for president on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform in 2003 and 2007 and on the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) platform in 2011.

In December 2014, Buhari was nominated as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2015 general election. He achieved a historic victory by defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, marking the first time in Nigeria's history that a sitting president lost a reelection bid. Buhari was inaugurated on May 29, 2015, and won reelection in February 2019, defeating his closest competitor, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, by over three million votes.

Buhari completed his tenure and handed over power to the current president, Bola Tinubu, on May 29, 2023.
