Brussels: European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib on Wednesday called for an immediate end to violence in Syria following Israeli airstrikes in the Suwayda region and Damascus.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lahbib expressed her concerns on social media platform X, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and restore calm amid escalating tensions. She highlighted the European Union's stance, urging for an immediate cessation of violence, protection of civilians, and full accountability for actions taken.

The airstrikes conducted by Israel targeted Syria's Defense Ministry and areas near the presidential palace in Damascus. Additionally, the strikes were resumed in southern Syria's Suwayda province with a warning from Israel that they would persist unless Syrian forces withdrew from the region.

The Syrian army had positioned troops in the area to restore order following deadly clashes between armed Druze and Bedouin groups, resulting in at least 30 casualties. The Israeli army justifies its operations as efforts to protect the Druze minority in the region.
