Tokyo: Japan and the EU have reiterated the urgent need for an "immediate and permanent" ceasefire in Gaza, condemning the worsening situation in the West Bank. This call was made during a summit in Tokyo, attended by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, EU Council President Antonio Costa, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

According to Anadolu Agency, the joint statement issued by Japan and the EU emphasized their commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Middle East. The leaders expressed their concern over the escalating violence and urged for the release of all hostages. They also called for an "unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza," which has been under blockade by the Israeli military.

The statement further highlighted support for Syria's pursuit of a peaceful and stable political future. Additionally, Japan and the EU affirmed their endorsement of Lebanon's efforts towards stabilization and reform.

The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 59,100 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has severely impacted the region, collapsing its health system and causing significant food shortages.

In a related development last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Furthermore, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice regarding its actions in the enclave.
