Tokyo: The European Union on Wednesday called for a "new era of freedom" in partnership with Japan, with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promising to strengthen ties with Tokyo. Speaking at Keio University in Tokyo, von der Leyen highlighted the need to create a new form of freedom and independence for the 21st century, emphasizing the importance of closer collaboration between Europe and Japan.

According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen stated, "For this, partners like Europe and Japan must come closer together. Not only to build our own independence. But to strengthen each others," in a message shared on X. Her speech underscored the significance of developing a new economic and industrial model that would facilitate prosperity while safeguarding their democracy.

EU Council President Antonio Costa accompanied von der Leyen on a visit to Japan, which included a summit with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The EU leaders initiated their trip by attending the World Expo 2025 in Osaka before the summit in Tokyo on Wednesday. During the talks, both sides are expected to announce enhancements to the "Japan-EU Competitiveness Alliance."
