Istanbul: Turkish defense firm STM announced that it has showcased a model of Trkiye's first indigenously designed Fast Attack Craft (FAC) for the first time at the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul. "Construction has officially commenced on the first national FAC, which will serve in the Turkish Naval Forces," the firm stated.
According to Anadolu Agency, a contract was signed on September 9, 2024, between STM and the Secretariat of Defense Industries (SSB) for the construction of the first vessel. The national FAC is designed to meet the modern operational needs of the Turkish Naval Forces, featuring high speed, advanced weapon systems, and superior maneuverability in rough sea conditions, which will be pivotal in safeguarding the Blue Homeland.
The FAC, described as the largest and heaviest fast attack craft for the Turkish Navy, will be capable of launching in approved concealment positions to perform surface warfare operations, making it more challenging for opponents to identify and detect. It will also be able to execute coordinated attacks with frigates and helicopters and engage surface targets using long-range guided missiles.
Equipped with sufficient air defense systems, the FAC promises great speed and mobility to ensure survivability. STM emphasized the project's commitment to utilizing as many indigenous resources as possible throughout the design, construction, and outfitting material procurement processes.
The FAC stands out with its ability to operate in shallow waters, designed with a low radar cross-section (RCS), and is capable of performing missions and executing live fire under heavy sea conditions, even at full load displacement. STM General Manager Ozgur Guleryuz expressed pride in showcasing the model of the indigenously designed FAC at IDEF for the first time, highlighting Trkiye's transition from operating foreign-designed FACs to realizing its indigenous FAC.
The 17th edition of the six-day defense fair IDEF, which commenced on Tuesday, is taking place at the Istanbul Fair Center, Ataturk Airport, Wow Hotel, and Atakoy Marina. Organized by KFA Fairs with support from Trkiye's Defense Industries Secretariat (SSB) and the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, the event features Anadolu as its global communication partner. This year's fair hosts ministers, chiefs of staff, commanders, and top representatives from 103 countries, with 44 countries participating with stalls.
