Brussels: Over 60 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have called for an emergency meeting to push for actions against Israel, as outlined in a letter sent to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The MEPs are urging immediate measures in response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinians, which have reportedly resulted in over 1,000 deaths.

According to Anadolu Agency, Marc Botenga, a Belgian MEP from the Left group, announced on X that the MEPs had written to Kallas, emphasizing the urgency of convening an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The letter expressed the MEPs' concern over the ineffective response following the recent EU-Israel aid agreement, which they argued had not led to any significant improvements in conditions on the ground.

The MEPs criticized the EU's response as inadequate, stating that while children die of starvation, the EU offers only "weak words and no action." They warned that history would judge the EU harshly for its inaction and complicity in what they described as "starvation and genocide in Gaza."

The lawmakers are demanding a comprehensive set of sanctions against Israel, targeting the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and specific individuals within the organization. They also called for a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and urged member states to implement a two-way arms embargo.

The letter concluded with a stark reminder of the urgency of the situation, stating, "Every day we do not take action is another day where Palestinians in Gaza are left to starve or be killed. Action is needed now."
