Gaza: The UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) stated that mass famine in the Gaza Strip is constructed and deliberate.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Israeli- and US-backed aid distribution mechanism, known as the 'Gaza Humanitarian Foundation' (GHF), serves 'military and political objectives.' UNRWA emphasized that the flawed distribution system is not designed to address the humanitarian crisis, asserting that it takes more lives than it saves.

UNRWA detailed how Israel controls all aspects of humanitarian access within and outside Gaza under the current system. The GHF, implemented by Tel Aviv since May 27, is backed by Israel and the US but has been rejected by the UN and major humanitarian organizations. During a ceasefire in 2025, UNRWA had previously managed to reverse deepening hunger, but the agency now has 6,000 trucks of food and medical assistance stuck in Egypt and Jordan.

The agency has repeatedly called for the reactivation of the UN-supervised aid distribution mechanism to alleviate the famine crisis. Since March 2, Israel has not implemented a ceasefire or prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, keeping Gaza's crossings shut and leaving aid trucks stranded. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive on Gaza, resulting in over 59,600 Palestinian deaths, primarily women and children. Starvation deaths have risen due to a prolonged blockade and inadequate aid distribution by the GHF.

In response, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
