Washington: The US House Oversight Committee has issued subpoenas to former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, mandating their testimony regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This development was reported by Fox News Digital on Tuesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Committee Chair James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, dispatched numerous Epstein-related subpoenas on Tuesday morning. The subpoenas also extend to the Justice Department, demanding records pertinent to the Epstein case. Additionally, former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, along with former attorneys general Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, William Barr, Jeff Sessions, and Alberto Gonzales, have been summoned to testify.
The testimony schedule has been set with Hillary Clinton required to appear on October 9, followed by Bill Clinton on October 14. Sessions and Barr, who served under the Trump administration, are scheduled for August 18 and August 28, respectively. Obama-era officials Lynch and Holder will testify on September 19 and September 30, while former Attorney General Merrick Garland and former Attorney General Gonzales are expected on October 2 and August 26, respectively. The Justice Department has been given a deadline of August 19 to submit Epstein-related records.
This wave of subpoenas follows a decision by a House subcommittee last month to authorize such measures. In a previous action, Comer also subpoenaed Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's convicted associate, but agreed to postpone her deposition due to her pending Supreme Court petition. Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year sentence for conspiring to sexually abuse minors, has appealed her 2021 conviction, citing a federal immunity agreement.
Epstein's connections with influential figures, including politicians, have been under scrutiny since his 2008 guilty plea for felony solicitation and procuring a minor for prostitution. For years, proponents of former President Trump, under the banner of "Make America Great Again," have vocally demanded the release of government-held Epstein records, speculating that these documents may implicate high-profile individuals.
Epstein was found dead on August 10, 2019, in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, with his death officially ruled a suicide.
