Washington: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has expressed its approval of Lebanon's recent decision to centralize the control of weapons exclusively under state institutions. This decision was announced by Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and approved by the Council of Ministers.

According to Anadolu Agency, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi emphasized the importance of this move, which aligns with the Taif Agreement and UN resolutions, as well as the commitments made by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in his inaugural address. Albudaiwi stated that centralizing weapons control is a critical step toward reinforcing Lebanon's state sovereignty and stability.

The GCC highlighted that this decision could lead to the activation of state institutions and enhance the investment environment in Lebanon, especially if accompanied by necessary reforms. The organization also reiterated its support for Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and stability, calling for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the Taif Agreement to restore state authority across the country.

This diplomatic support comes as Lebanon's government plans to limit all arms possession to the national army by the end of the year. This initiative has been met with resistance from Hezbollah, which views the decision as politically motivated and influenced by Israeli and US pressure. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has tasked the military with developing a roadmap for the plan's implementation, while President Joseph Aoun proposed a broader national strategy, including Israeli withdrawal and prisoner releases. Despite these developments, Hezbollah has dismissed the plan as a 'grave sin,' choosing to ignore its existence.
