Beijing: Heavy rainfall has led to devastating floods and landslides in northwest and southern China, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 individuals and leaving 33 others missing.

According to Anadolu Agency, the state-run media reported these incidents on Friday, highlighting the severe impact of the weather conditions.

In northwest China's Gansu province, the situation is particularly dire, with ten fatalities and 33 missing persons confirmed. The central regions of Gansu, notably Lanzhou, Linxia, and Baiyin, experienced relentless rainfall on Thursday night. In Yuzhong County, the downpour caused mountain floods, isolating residents and disrupting essential services such as power and communication in the Xinglong Mountain area. Over 4,000 people in four villages remain cut off due to the adverse conditions. Torrential rains, reaching up to 195 millimeters (7.6 inches), also triggered mudslides, obstructing roads and complicating rescue efforts. In response, authorities have issued a red flood alert and initiated a Level III emergency response.

In southern China's Guangdong province, a landslide induced by heavy rains buried 14 people on Wednesday. By Friday, authorities confirmed the death of seven individuals, while the remaining seven were successfully rescued from the debris. The landslide also resulted in significant damage to multiple houses in the region.

These recent events follow a pattern of extreme weather across China. Last week, Beijing faced severe rainfall, leading to the deaths of at least 30 people and causing significant infrastructure damage and mass evacuations. Continuous heavy rainfalls have similarly affected eastern, northern, and northeastern regions of China, resulting in floods and geological disasters in Beijing, Hebei, Jilin, and Shandong, with substantial casualties reported.
