According to Anadolu Agency, the Prime Minister's remarks follow widespread demonstrations across Australia, where tens of thousands of Australians marched in support of Palestinians, urging an end to Australia's arms trade with Israel and addressing the famine in Gaza. Albanese clarified that Australia, while not a major power in the Middle East, does not supply arms to Israel and has consistently advocated for humanitarian aid access to Gaza. He reiterated Australia's call for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, alongside urging for Hamas to disarm.
Earlier in the month, Albanese declared Australia's intention to join Canada, France, and Britain in formally recognizing Palestinian statehood at the forthcoming 80th session of the UN General Assembly. He noted that Australia has engaged diplomatically with neighboring Pacific countries, including New Zealand, to discuss Palestinian recognition. Albanese stressed that Australia's decisions would prioritize national interest and ethical considerations.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with Israel having closed all crossings since March 2, severely limiting humanitarian aid to the territory's 2.4 million residents. The blockade has exacerbated the already critical conditions, leading to widespread famine. Israeli military actions since October 2023 have resulted in the deaths of nearly 62,700 Palestinians and significant devastation of the region.
