Taipei: Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te has announced a significant reshuffling of the Cabinet, impacting 16 officials across 10 government agencies, following the defeat of a recall vote against opposition lawmakers. This move comes as part of the administration's efforts to recover from recent political challenges.

According to Anadolu Agency, the reshuffle follows a failed attempt to recall 31 Kuomintang (KMT) legislators, which could have prematurely concluded their legislative terms. The Lai administration seeks to regain momentum amidst declining approval ratings and unsuccessful recall campaigns.

Premier Cho Jung-tai is expected to publicly introduce the new Cabinet members after the upcoming weekly Cabinet meeting on Thursday, as announced by the Executive Yuan. Key changes in the Cabinet include Executive Yuan Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin stepping in as the new minister of economic affairs, replacing Kuo Jyh-huei. Xavier Chang, currently serving as deputy secretary-general at the presidential office, will take over Kung's previous role.

Further appointments include Yeh Chun-hsien as the new National Development Council minister, and Lin Yi-jing as the digital affairs minister. In the health sector, Shih Chung-liang, the National Health Insurance Administration Director-General, will assume the position of health minister. Additionally, Olympic badminton gold medalist Lee Yang is set to lead the Sports Ministry.
