Gaza city: The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has firmly denied recent media reports suggesting that it has agreed to disarm under a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. The reports claimed that Hamas would surrender its weapons to a Palestinian-Egyptian committee operating under international supervision.
According to Anadolu Agency, several media outlets had circulated these claims, suggesting a significant shift in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. However, senior Hamas member Mahmoud Mardawi issued a statement categorically denying these reports, describing them as fabricated and misleading.
Mardawi emphasized that such media reports are baseless and are intended to distort Hamas' position and mislead public opinion. He urged media organizations to verify their information and rely on credible sources, cautioning journalists against spreading rumors or unverified claims.
In the backdrop of these developments, Egypt is preparing to host delegations from both Hamas and Israel to deliberate on the specifics of a prisoner swap deal under Trump's Gaza plan. The plan, unveiled on September 29, encompasses the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners, a ceasefire, disarmament of Hamas, and the rebuilding of Gaza. While Hamas has agreed to the plan in principle, further discussions are scheduled to take place in Egypt.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with the Israeli army reportedly having killed over 67,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since October 2023. The continuous bombardment has left the enclave uninhabitable, leading to widespread starvation and the outbreak of diseases.
