ICC Convicts Sudanese Militia Leader Ali Kushayb of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity

The hague: The International Criminal Court (ICC) has found Sudanese former militia leader Ali Muhammad Ali Abd al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, guilty of 27 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes. These crimes were committed in Darfur, Sudan, between 2003 and 2004.

According to Anadolu Agency, the ICC unanimously convicted Kushayb on 31 counts, including attacks against civilians, murder, torture, rape, pillaging, destruction of property, persecution, and forcible transfer of population. The crimes took place during the Kodoom and Bindisi operations, along with other related military campaigns, as stated by the court.

A formal sentencing procedure will follow, as announced by the court. The conflict in Darfur, which began in 2003, involved a fierce battle between the Sudanese government and three rebel movements. It has resulted in 300,000 deaths and the displacement of around 2.5 million people, based on United Nations figures.
