Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed concern over the rapid expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, describing it as an 'existential threat' to the future Palestinian state. He stated that this expansion is 'unacceptable and contrary to international law.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron's remarks came during a meeting in Paris attended by European and Arab ministers, aimed at discussing post-war arrangements in Gaza. He emphasized that the construction of settlements not only fuels tensions, violence, and instability, but also contradicts the American peace plan and collective ambitions for the region.

Macron highlighted that the acceleration of settlement construction endangers the Abraham Accords and urged all parties to avoid creating another conflict zone while efforts to secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza are ongoing. He stressed the importance of vigilance regarding the situation in the West Bank.

Furthermore, Macron underscored the necessity for self-determination and the creation of a unified Palestinian state under the Palestinian Authority. He described the current period as crucial, urging Israel to approve a plan that offers hope to families affected by conflict and a new perspective for the Israeli people beyond continuous warfare.

Macron referenced a 'historic agreement' reached in Sharm el-Sheikh, which he believes could lead to a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages, and immediate humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip. He reiterated France's commitment to a two-state solution and support for the US-backed ceasefire plan aimed at stabilizing Gaza and promoting peaceful coexistence in the region.

The French President acknowledged former US President Trump's efforts for a comprehensive agreement in the Middle East, expressing France's support for this vision of a permanent ceasefire and stabilization of Gaza.
