Orlando: A US federal judge in Florida has ordered Jonathan Rinderknecht, accused of igniting the deadly Palisades Fire in California, to remain in custody. The decision was made due to concerns regarding Rinderknecht's mental health and his ability to attend future court proceedings. Prosecutors highlighted his tendencies towards arson and noted that his family has also expressed worries.

According to Anadolu Agency, federal officials have accused Rinderknecht, a local resident of the area, of starting a fire on New Year's Day. This fire initially smoldered underground before reigniting and rapidly spreading through Pacific Palisades, a region known for its affluent residents in Los Angeles. The fire tragically claimed the lives of 12 individuals in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. It was one of two fires on January 7 that together resulted in over 30 fatalities, the destruction of more than 17,000 homes and buildings, and burned relentlessly for several days across Los Angeles County.

ATF agent Thomas Harrison provided testimony indicating that Rinderknecht had moved in with his sister and brother-in-law in Brevard County, Florida, approximately five months ago. However, due to safety concerns, the family has initiated eviction proceedings against him. Law enforcement was summoned twice in the previous month following incidents where Rinderknecht allegedly threatened to set the house ablaze during a disagreement with his sister. Additionally, he reportedly told his visiting father that he possessed a firearm and would use it in self-defense. Despite these incidents, no arrests or charges have been filed against him.

Rinderknecht is scheduled to remain in Seminole County Jail until an October 17 hearing. During this hearing, prosecutors are expected to present evidence to formally charge him.
