Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has emphasized the critical need for strict adherence to the newly established Gaza ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, warning against any Israeli provocations that could potentially reignite hostilities and exacerbate civilian suffering.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan addressed the media during a joint news conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, underscoring the importance of proceeding with the agreement without any disruptions. The ceasefire, reached in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh, is based on a 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. The plan's first phase includes an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and prisoners, Israel's withdrawal to a predetermined line in Gaza, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave.
The subsequent phase of the plan involves establishing a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas's participation and forming a security force composed of Palestinians and troops from Arab and Islamic countries. It also includes the disarmament of Hamas, with Arab and Islamic nations providing financial support for Gaza's new administration and reconstruction, while the Palestinian Authority plays a limited role.
Fidan highlighted that the deal terms were finalized after extensive negotiations, addressing key issues such as the entry of humanitarian aid, the return of displaced Palestinians, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. He noted Trkiye's commitment to providing technical assistance on the ground and diplomatic backing internationally to ensure adherence to the agreement.
Fidan warned that failure to implement the first phase could lead to renewed conflict and massacres, emphasizing Trkiye's collaboration with the international community and regional partners to ensure the peace process advances smoothly. The immediate priorities include enforcing the ceasefire, securing hostage releases, and facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries.
Additionally, Fidan spoke about a joint initiative with Iraq to tackle regional water scarcity, expressing solidarity with Iraqi communities facing water shortages. Trkiye has worked under President Erdogan's directives to address these issues, despite challenges such as drought and climate change that also affect Turkey.
Fidan also discussed expanding energy partnerships with Iraq, highlighting opportunities in oil, electricity, and natural gas trade. Significant progress has been made, such as the resumption of oil shipments via the Iraq-Trkiye crude oil pipeline, enhancing bilateral relations and trade.
Fidan emphasized the importance of strengthening Iraq-Syria relations for regional security and stability, commending Iraq's efforts to reinforce Syria's territorial integrity and its fight against ISIS/Daesh. Trkiye remains committed to supporting regional stability and security, working closely with Iraqi counterparts.
He concluded with an update on the successful evacuation of Turkish citizens and activists from ships seized by Israel and reiterated Trkiye's commitment to maintaining open dialogue and humanitarian diplomacy channels amid global and regional challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
