Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Sunday that he had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, focusing on strengthening Ukraine's air defense and long-range capabilities.

According to Anadolu Agency, this call marked the second discussion between the leaders over the weekend. Zelenskyy described their Saturday conversation as 'very positive and productive,' during which he congratulated Trump on securing a ceasefire deal for Gaza. On the social media platform X, Zelenskyy shared that their second call was equally 'very productive,' with discussions built upon topics agreed upon during their initial conversation.

Zelenskyy emphasized that their talks encompassed various aspects of the situation in Ukraine, particularly enhancing military capabilities. Discussions also covered energy sector details, with Zelenskyy noting Trump's comprehensive understanding of ongoing events. The two leaders agreed to maintain an ongoing dialogue, with their teams already preparing for future engagements.

The timing of this call is significant, as it precedes a planned visit by a Ukrainian delegation to the US, which includes Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and other key officials. The delegation's agenda will cover air defense, energy, sanctions, and negotiations, with the issue of frozen assets also on the table.

Recently, Trump indicated he is nearing a decision on providing long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. He expressed a desire to understand their usage before proceeding. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concerns, suggesting that the provision of Tomahawks to Ukraine could severely damage US-Russian relations and lead to a new level of escalation.
