Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday stated that Syria's recent parliamentary election is expected to enhance ties and dialogue among the country's political entities. During a meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Putin emphasized that despite Syria's current challenges, the election would foster cooperation among all political forces.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sharaa's visit to Moscow marks his first official trip since taking office in December 2024, following the ouster of the Bashar al-Assad regime. The Kremlin had announced that Assad and his family were granted asylum in Russia a day after his removal.

Putin highlighted that Russia's approach to its relationship with Syria has consistently prioritized the interests of the Syrian people, maintaining an 'exclusively friendly' rapport with Damascus. He described the parliamentary election as a 'great success,' suggesting it will lead to societal consolidation.

The Russian leader also mentioned the longstanding intergovernmental commission between the two nations, established in 1993, which is now resuming its operations. Expressing gratitude for Syria's hospitality during Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak's recent visit to Damascus, Putin noted that numerous 'interesting and useful initiatives' were discussed.

Putin concluded by affirming Russia's commitment to implementing these initiatives and sustaining regular communications through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
