Washington: US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a phone conversation addressing trade and geopolitical issues. Modi expressed gratitude for the call and shared warm Diwali greetings on US social media platform X, highlighting the significance of the Hindu festival of lights celebrated across India earlier this week.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussion focused primarily on trade matters, with Trump emphasizing the importance of the economic relationship between the two countries. He noted that although various topics were covered, trade was a central theme. Modi's commitment to reducing oil purchases from Russia was also mentioned, aligning with broader geopolitical concerns regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

India's increasing imports of discounted Russian crude since 2022 have positioned it as a key energy customer for Moscow, despite Western sanctions. The conversation between Trump and Modi also touched upon regional stability in South Asia. Trump underscored the importance of peaceful relations between Pakistan and India, noting the absence of conflict as a positive development. Earlier this year, a brief skirmish between the two nations concluded with a ceasefire, facilitated by Trump.
