Istanbul: Trkiye is taking a significant step forward in technological innovation aimed at combating forest fires by hosting the Istanbul Forest Innovation Week (IFIW) 2025. This pivotal event is set to take place from October 20-25 in Istanbul, bringing together over 400 experts and 30 organizations from 75 countries to engage in comprehensive discussions on forest management and wildfire prevention strategies.
According to Anadolu Agency, the event is being coordinated by the Forestry General Directorate (OGM), with Anadolu serving as its global communications partner. Ismail Belen, chair of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), highlighted Trkiye's promising future in tech-driven leadership to fight wildfires. Belen emphasized the global significance of sharing such technological advancements.
Belen addressed the growing concern of forest fires, which are now affecting regions beyond the Mediterranean, including countries like Germany, Austria, and Finland. He expressed confidence in Trkiye's capabilities, stating, "I can say without a doubt, as the chair of the UNFF, that Trkiye is the best in combating forest fires," during the sidelines of the IFIW 2025 event.
Trkiye's role in developing wildfire combat technologies and forestry innovations is evident, as Belen pointed out. The OGM has invested years in detailed monitoring, providing data on the location, number, and diameter of every tree. The country currently employs more than 10 drones capable of detecting wildfires at the first sign of smoke. This integrated approach, including helicopters and other vehicles, enables rapid response to fires, reaching affected areas in approximately 12 minutes.
Belen also highlighted the opportunity for showcasing Trkiye's advancements at the event, advising manufacturers to broaden their focus beyond firefighting. Innovations in drones for mapping, inventory, wildlife monitoring, and pest tracking are crucial for comprehensive forestry management.
He predicted an evolution in firefighting and forestry technologies, with increased drone usage anticipated within a decade. Companies are increasingly recognizing this market shift, and Belen expressed confidence in Trkiye's potential to emerge as a world leader in forestry, akin to its achievements in defense and contracting.
