ASEAN and India Designate 2026 as Year of Maritime Cooperation


Kuala lumpur: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have jointly declared 2026 as the year dedicated to bilateral maritime cooperation. This announcement was made during the 22nd ASEAN-India summit, emphasizing the significance of maritime collaboration between India and ASEAN countries.



According to Anadolu Agency, Modi addressed the summit virtually, highlighting India’s steadfast support for ASEAN nations, particularly in areas such as Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, maritime security, and the blue economy. Modi articulated that the ongoing century belongs to India and ASEAN, showcasing the growing ties and cooperation between the two regions.



During his address, Modi described India and ASEAN as companions in the Global South, underscoring their roles not only as commercial partners but also as cultural allies. He reiterated that ASEAN remains a foundational element of India’s Act East Policy, emphasizing India’s unwavering support for ASEAN centrality and its strategic outlook in the Indo-Pacific region.



The summit, held in Kuala Lumpur, was chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, marking a significant step in strengthening ASEAN-India relations through focused maritime initiatives.
