Gyeongju: Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Friday to abide by and fulfill "clear provisions on major issues" to ensure "that the foundation of China-Japan relations is neither damaged nor shaken." The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea's southeastern city of Gyeongju.

According to Anadolu Agency, Xi emphasized the need for both countries to adhere to the provisions outlined in four political documents between China and Japan, focusing on major issues such as history and Taiwan. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the spirit of the "Murayama Statement," which reflects Japan's history of aggression and extends apologies to the victimized countries.

The Chinese president called for the implementation of a political consensus to advance the strategic, mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations. He stressed that China and Japan should be partners rather than threats to each other, advocating for a future-oriented approach by taking history as a mirror.

Xi expressed China's readiness to work with Japan to build constructive and stable relations, aiming to meet the requirements of the new era. He noted that China-Japan relations currently face both opportunities and challenges and expressed hope that Japan's new Cabinet would establish a correct understanding of China, adhering to the direction of peace, friendship, and cooperation.

Xi also emphasized the importance of safeguarding cooperation and mutual benefit, suggesting enhanced collaboration in areas such as high-end manufacturing, the digital economy, and finance. He urged both countries to jointly uphold the multilateral trading system and ensure stable industrial and supply chains.

President Xi advocated for practicing true multilateralism and promoting the building of an Asia-Pacific community. He encouraged both nations to manage differences properly and seek common ground while reserving differences.

Prime Minister Takaichi acknowledged China as an important neighboring country and emphasized the significant responsibilities both nations bear for peace and prosperity in the region and the wider world. She reaffirmed Japan's commitment to the position stated in the 1972 Japan-China joint statement on Taiwan.
