Washington: US President Donald Trump stated that Chinese officials have assured him that Beijing would refrain from any actions regarding Taiwan during his presidency, emphasizing that "they know the consequences."

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump mentioned in a CBS interview aired on Sunday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and his representatives have clearly communicated during meetings that they would not engage in any activities concerning Taiwan while Trump is in office due to potential repercussions.

When questioned about the potential deployment of US forces to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, Trump opted not to disclose his stance publicly, stating, "You'll find out if it happens. And he understands the answer to that." Trump further revealed that the topic of Taiwan was not discussed during his meeting with Xi in South Korea as part of his Asia tour, noting the unexpected nature of the omission.

Trump explained that Xi did not raise the issue, as he "understands it very well." However, when pressed for further clarification on what Xi comprehends, Trump declined to provide additional details, remarking, "The other side knows, but I'm not somebody that tells you everything."

The situation with Taiwan remains a significant point of tension in US-China relations. While Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province, Taipei has maintained its independence since 1949. The US supports Taiwan's defense through the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, which guide US policy toward the island.
