Gaza city: Israeli naval forces detained five Palestinian fishermen off the coast of Gaza City, a local group reported. Israeli gunboats allegedly opened fire on fishing boats west of Gaza Port, compelling the fishermen to abandon their vessels and jump into the water before being apprehended.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zakaria Bakr of the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, a nongovernmental organization, stated that four of the detainees are from the same family, including three brothers. Despite a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, effective since October 10, Israeli forces continue to prohibit fishing in Gaza's waters. Israeli naval forces persist in pursuing and arresting fishermen, cutting off their primary source of income amid the enclave's deteriorating economy.

Gazan fishermen, undeterred by the risks, continue to venture out to sea to sustain their families amidst economic collapse and high unemployment levels. According to World Bank data, Israel's two-year conflict in Gaza has driven nearly all residents into poverty, leaving them reliant on humanitarian assistance.

The initial phase of the ceasefire deal included exchanging Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and a partial Israeli withdrawal. The plan also aims to rebuild Gaza and establish a new governing mechanism without Hamas. Since October 2023, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 69,000 people and injuries to over 170,600 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
