Lima: Peru has cut diplomatic ties with Mexico following the latter's decision to grant asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who is currently under investigation for her alleged involvement in a 2022 coup attempt.

According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela expressed his surprise and regret during a news conference in Lima, stating that Chavez, accused of being a co-author in the coup attempt led by former President Pedro Castillo, was granted asylum at the Mexican Embassy residence in Peru. Minister de Zela cited this as an unfriendly act and highlighted Mexico's repeated interference in Peru's internal affairs as the reason for severing the diplomatic relations.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry responded by expressing regret over Peru's decision, labeling it as excessive and disproportionate. The ministry asserted that Mexico's action to grant asylum was in alignment with international law and did not constitute interference in Peru's domestic matters.

Tensions have been high between the two countries since December 2022, when then-President Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress amid a political impasse. In the aftermath, Mexico provided asylum to Castillo's family, which led to diplomatic strains including the expulsion of the Mexican ambassador by Peru and the temporary recall of its envoy.

Castillo was apprehended while heading to the Mexican Embassy in Lima, seeking refuge after his announcement to dissolve Congress. He now faces charges of rebellion and abuse of authority. Meanwhile, Chavez, who served as Castillo's prime minister, was released on bail despite facing charges related to the alleged coup, with prosecutors seeking significant prison sentences for both Castillo and Chavez. Both deny the charges, maintaining their innocence in the events that transpired.
