Beijing: Beijing emphasized that adhering to the one-China principle is a political prerequisite for Taiwan's participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting next year.

According to Anadolu Agency, China will host the 2026 APEC meeting in Shenzhen. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Taipei must comply with the relevant provisions and established practices under APEC's memorandum of understanding. Mao asserted that China's position on this issue is clear and firm, reiterating that adherence to the one-China principle is essential for Chinese Taipei's participation in APEC.

Taiwan's top diplomat, Lin Chia-lung, responded by announcing that Taipei will launch "countermeasures" against China. Lin emphasized that Taiwan will safeguard its right to participate and collaborate with like-minded countries to implement these countermeasures. Taiwan has been a member of APEC since 1991 under the name "Chinese Taipei."

Under the one-China principle, Beijing considers Taiwan a part of Chinese territory, while Taipei has maintained a stance on independence since 1949.
