Rio de janeiro: Carlos Silva Filho, a member of the UN Zero Waste Advisory Board, expressed his anticipation for the upcoming COP30 in Belem, Brazil, emphasizing its potential to bolster international cooperation among nations. The summit, commencing on November 10, will focus on addressing the interconnected crises of pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

According to Anadolu Agency, Filho shared his insights during the Global Zero Waste Forum held in Istanbul. Hosting this year's summit in Belem, the gateway to the Amazon Rainforest, underscores the critical role of the Amazon in combating climate change and biodiversity loss. Following its recent hosting of the G20 and BRICS summits, Brazil aims to continue its leadership in uniting countries around the climate change agenda at COP30.

Filho, also the president of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), highlighted the varied expectations surrounding the climate negotiations and noted the impact of current geopolitical discussions on these proceedings. He emphasized the symbolic significance of hosting COP30 in the Amazon, a region embodying the environmental benefits that must be protected.

Filho stressed the necessity for countries to collaborate in safeguarding the planet. He likened the challenge of securing adequate resources and planning to an "elephant in the room," acknowledging the current shortfall in the resources required for meaningful change. He reiterated that no single nation can confront the triple planetary crisis alone and called for stronger South-South, North-South, and multilateral collaborations.

Highlighting the need to prioritize environmental cooperation over economic competition, Filho urged for a shift in mindset at COP30 and future summits, emphasizing that without a sustainable planet, trade and natural resources are at risk. He pointed out that Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline countries' climate targets, will be a crucial focus, stressing that these commitments are vital for reducing global emissions.

Filho also drew attention to the importance of waste management in achieving climate goals, particularly the reduction of methane emissions. He noted ongoing efforts to ensure that countries prioritize this issue, given its significant impact on global methane emissions.
