Washington: President Donald Trump announced that he is contemplating issuing a waiver that would allow Hungary to continue purchasing Russian oil without the threat of secondary sanctions from the United States. This consideration comes as Trump hosted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the White House.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump expressed the challenges Hungary faces in sourcing oil and gas from regions other than Russia, citing the country's lack of access to sea routes and ports. He emphasized that while many European countries have historically relied on Russian energy, Hungary's situation is unique due to its geographical constraints.

In October, Trump imposed sanctions on Russia's largest oil firms, Rosneft and Lukoil, along with 34 of their subsidiaries. This action was part of an effort to increase pressure on the Kremlin amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine. The potential waiver for Hungary suggests a nuanced approach to balancing strategic alliances and geopolitical tensions.
