Istanbul: Palestine hailed on Saturday Turkish arrest warrants against 37 Israeli officials as a victory for justice, calling on other countries to follow Ankara's example. The warrants issued by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office target senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Army Chief Eyal Zamir, and Israeli Naval Forces Commander David Saar Salama.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry expressed in a statement that this legal action symbolizes a triumph for justice and reflects the will of nations and leaders opposing the policy of impunity granted to Israel by some countries. The ministry emphasized that the move underscores the importance of universal jurisdiction in addressing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The ministry further highlighted that the Turkish judiciary's decision represents a significant legal and moral stance. It conveys a strong message that individuals committing crimes against Palestinians will face accountability, irrespective of their official positions.
In a related development, in November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip. This follows Israel's offensive that resulted in the deaths of nearly 69,000 people, predominantly women and children, and left over 170,000 injured before a ceasefire deal took effect on October 10, 2023.
