Ankara: Tens of thousands of displaced civilians have fled North Darfur and North Kordofan due to ongoing attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission reported Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Commissioner Salwa Adam Benia stated that the displaced civilians have sought refuge in the cities of Dongola in Northern State and El-Obeid in North Kordofan. Benia shared these remarks following a meeting with Turkish Ambassador Fatih Yildiz and Hamza Tasdelen, the deputy president of Trkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) in Port Sudan.

Benia expressed gratitude to Trkiye, its institutions, and civil society organizations for their support during the crisis, emphasizing the humanitarian nature of Trkiye's assistance. She highlighted the massive displacement from North Darfur and North Kordofan to various cities, particularly to Dongola, and noted the daily increase in numbers.

The commissioner detailed that El-Obeid city has received more than 175,000 displaced people from the three Kordofan states over the past month. Additionally, displaced families from Darfur and Kordofan have reached other states, including Gadaref and Kassala in eastern Sudan, with over 3,000 arriving in Kassala alone.

Benia mentioned that a voluntary return is taking place in Khartoum, Wad Madani, and Sennar as the army regains control. However, she stressed the need for support to rehabilitate health facilities, establish medical centers, repair water wells, and restore essential services in these regions.

The commissioner underscored the urgent need for assistance for the displaced civilians, including shelter, food, medical treatment, and environmental health services. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, ongoing since April 15, 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions.
