Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the significance of US support in maintaining stability in Syria during a live broadcast on Turkish news channel A Haber. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the US and Trkiye to ensure prosperity and order in the region.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan referred to a recent meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump, where major topics concerning bilateral relations and regional dynamics were discussed. Fidan underscored Trkiye's recent foreign policy performance and its reliability as a partner, which has made it a preferred actor for cooperation on various issues.
During the discussions at the White House, key issues such as Syria, Palestine, and Ukraine were brought to the forefront, emphasizing the need for a shared understanding and close coordination to safeguard Trkiye's national interests. Fidan highlighted Trkiye's efforts in Syria, including stabilizing the region, enabling refugee returns, and supporting the new administration's bid for international legitimacy.
Fidan pointed out Trkiye's commitment to preserving Syria's territorial integrity and the well-being of its people while seeking regional cooperation. He remarked that Trkiye's presence in Syria is essential for addressing the country's problems, which benefits not only Trkiye but also the broader region. Trkiye's foreign policy aims to advance shared regional interests, rather than acting solely for its own advantage.
The issue of the PKK/YPG terror organization, operating under the name SDF in Syria, was a major topic in talks with Washington. Fidan stressed the need for a 'shared understanding' to make progress. He noted that the US built mechanisms and political investments under the pretext of fighting ISIS/Daesh, and resolving this requires 'care, order, and patience.'
Fidan also mentioned the importance of contacts between Damascus and the YPG, which were interrupted due to developments following Israel's intervention in southern Syria. He emphasized the need for Israel to cease being a threat to Syria, and vice versa, while respecting each other's territorial integrity.
He further noted that parts of Syria remain under occupation and stressed that the occupation must end. Fidan expressed hope that the talks between the YPG and Damascus will progress, with ongoing negotiations involving the US and Trkiye's channels. He highlighted Israeli provocations in southern Syria and thanked members of the UN Security Council for significant diplomatic moves, including the removal of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara from the UN terror list.
