Paris: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday announced that Ukraine has placed an order to acquire 100 Dassault Rafale fighter jets as part of a deal signed with French President Emmanuel Macron. The agreement aims to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy informed journalists about the historic order immediately after signing a declaration of intent with Macron. The signing took place at the Velizy-Villacoublay airbase near Paris, focusing on strengthening defense cooperation and equipment acquisition for Kyiv.

During a joint press briefing with Macron in Paris, Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of the agreement, which spans a decade starting from 2026. The deal also includes an unspecified number of French radars and eight SAMP/T air defense systems, each equipped with six launchers.

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of France's support in achieving security in Europe and mentioned discussions with defense companies about technological cooperation. Additionally, an agreement was announced between Ukraine's state-owned railway company Ukrzaliznytsia and French train manufacturer Alstom SA to purchase 55 new electric locomotives to enhance Ukrainian logistics.

The Ukrainian president expressed gratitude to Macron for a forthcoming defense package, expected to strengthen Ukraine further. Details of the package remain undisclosed.

Zelenskyy's visit to France followed a trip to Athens, Greece, where an agreement was reached for the supply of liquefied natural gas from the US to Ukraine. The Ukrainian president is scheduled to visit Spain next.
