Google Announces Dhivaru Undersea Cable System to Connect Maldives, Christmas Island, and Oman

New york: Google on Monday unveiled its plans for a new undersea cable system named Dhivaru, designed to connect the Maldives, Christmas Island, and Oman. This ambitious project aims to enhance digital connectivity across the Indian Ocean region.

According to Anadolu Agency, the initiative is set to build on the existing Australia Connect project, aiming to increase the reach, reliability, and resilience of digital connections throughout the Indian Ocean. Google also announced an investment in establishing two new connectivity hubs in the Maldives and Christmas Island, which are strategically positioned to enhance digital accessibility for regions spanning Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Oceania.

The announcement was positively received by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who expressed that Google's investment reflects global confidence in the Maldives' stable and investor-friendly environment. He emphasized that the project aligns with his vision for a diversified and digitally empowered Maldivian economy, transforming the nation into a regional digital hub.

Furthermore, the Maldives Economic Ministry highlighted that Google's investments would bolster the country's status as a trusted digital gateway, linking Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
