Khartoum: A Sudanese medical group has issued an urgent appeal for assistance concerning 243 pregnant women who have fled attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the western city of El-Fasher.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Sudan Doctors Network reported that over 100 pregnant women have reached Tawila city in North Darfur state, while another 143 have arrived at the Al-Dabba camp in the Northern State. The network highlighted the dire conditions, noting instances of miscarriage as the women escaped El-Fasher.

The Sudan Doctors Network has called upon international and humanitarian organizations to provide immediate support and enhance health and medical services for those fleeing the violence. They emphasized the necessity of safeguarding mothers, creating a safe childbirth environment, and mitigating health risks for displaced women and girls.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 100,000 civilians have evacuated El-Fasher since its capture by the RSF on October 26. The RSF currently controls all five Darfur states, while the army retains control over the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

Darfur, constituting about one-fifth of Sudan's land area, contrasts with the army-held regions where most of the nation's 50 million people reside. The ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in at least 40,000 fatalities and the displacement of 12 million individuals, as reported by the World Health Organization.
