Zelenskyy Engages European Leaders on US-Drafted Peace Plan

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a coordinated effort with European leaders regarding a US-drafted peace proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelenskyy held a joint call with French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to align their positions on the proposed plan.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to the European leaders for their support, emphasizing the importance of crafting a plan that would ensure peace for Ukraine and the entire European region. He acknowledged the efforts made by the United States, President Trump, and his team in drafting the peace proposal, affirming that Ukrainian and European teams would continue to collaborate on refining the document.

The Ukrainian president highlighted the importance of maintaining close coordination with European partners to ensure that Ukraine's fundamental positions are represented in the negotiations. This comes in the wake of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov's denial of any involvement in modifying the draft plan during his recent visit to Washington. Umerov clarified that his role was logistical, addressing claims of his participation in discussions about the peace plan.

Axios reported that Umerov had some level of involvement, working with US envoy Steve Witkoff, although a Ukrainian official stated that Kyiv did not accept the plan's central elements. The draft reportedly includes controversial demands such as Ukraine relinquishing aspirations for NATO membership, recognizing certain territories as Russian-controlled, and establishing a demilitarized zone in Donbas in return for security guarantees.

Zelenskyy has expressed his intention to discuss these proposals directly with President Trump. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has indicated that no further discussions have occurred since the leaders' meeting in Alaska in August.
