China and US Engage in Maritime Security Discussions in Hawaii

Honolulu: Chinese and US military officials convened for a "candid and constructive" meeting under the 2025 China-US Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) in Hawaii, as reported by Chinese state-run media on Saturday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the second round of working group talks and their annual meeting under the MMCA took place from Tuesday to Thursday. The discussions were based on information from China Daily, citing a statement from the People's Liberation Army Navy. The statement emphasized that the two sides engaged in discussions on an equal and respectful basis.

During the meeting, officials from both nations addressed the current maritime and air security situation and reviewed typical encounters at sea and in the air. The discussions also included an assessment of the annual implementation of the US-China memorandum of understanding regarding the rules of behavior for the safety of air and maritime encounters.

China expressed its firm opposition to actions carried out under the guise of freedom of navigation and overflight, stating that such actions could endanger its sovereignty and security. The initial meeting of MMCA's 2025 working group was previously held in Shanghai in April of this year.
