Warsaw: Poland's Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has stated that Warsaw must continue accelerating its military modernization 'regardless of what happens' in ongoing negotiations aimed at ending Russia's war in Ukraine. Speaking after weekend talks in Geneva between Ukrainian, US, and European officials on a proposed American peace framework, Kosiniak-Kamysz warned that any diplomatic momentum should not slow Poland's defense preparations, TVP World reported on Tuesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the need for Poland to arm itself, suggesting that an acceleration of military build-up will be necessary 'even more, even sooner.' His remarks highlight Poland's position as one of NATO's highest defense spenders, with significant investments in new equipment and an expanding armed forces in response to regional security concerns.
Kosiniak-Kamysz referenced recent comments by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had discussions in Geneva with Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to the Ukrainian president. Rubio described the meeting as 'the most productive and meaningful' to date, noting that the delegations made 'good progress.' He viewed these comments as 'a much more positive signal than the reports regarding the peace plan itself.'
Following the talks, Kyiv and Washington announced a 'refined peace framework,' emphasizing that any settlement 'must fully uphold Ukraine's sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace.' Despite these developments, Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that Poland should not expect an imminent breakthrough and must continue strengthening its defense capabilities.
