Dublin: Amnesty International is set to deliver a global petition to TikTok's Dublin office, urging the social media platform to intensify efforts to shield children and young users from harmful and addictive content.

According to Anadolu Agency, the petition, which has garnered 170,240 signatures from individuals worldwide, will be presented by four young digital rights activists hailing from Ireland, Argentina, and France. Amnesty International highlights that the overwhelming response reflects a growing global concern about TikTok's features that 'prioritize engagement over user safety.' The organization warns that the platform's current design may expose children to significant risks.

Zahra Asif Razvi, a campaigner at Amnesty International, remarked that the signatures represent a global demand for TikTok to transition from an addictive design to one that prioritizes safety. Razvi emphasized that TikTok must ensure its platform enables children and young users to engage socially, learn, and access information without harm.

Amnesty International has consistently pointed out that TikTok's personalized "For You" feed can lead children into cycles of depression, self-harm, and exposure to suicide-related content. This appeal comes shortly after TikTok hosted a European Trust and Safety Forum at its Dublin office, where the company presented its plans to leverage artificial intelligence to enhance user safety.

As part of their ongoing efforts, TikTok announced a new Time and Wellbeing Space aimed at helping users relax and develop mindful digital habits. The platform stated that this update is part of its continuous commitment to supporting the safety and wellbeing of the TikTok community, particularly teenagers.
