Luanda: EU Council President Antonio Costa stated at a press conference that the conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo should not be considered mere local or regional disputes, emphasizing that they are violations of international law.
According to Anadolu Agency, Costa highlighted that allowing any state to disregard another nation's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and recognized borders sets a precedent that could lead other countries to do the same. He delivered these remarks alongside Angolan President Joao Lourenco after the 7th African Union-European Union Summit in Luanda. Costa further stressed the importance of the Europe-Africa partnership, which is based on shared values and a commitment to a multilateral, international rules-based order. He warned against the alternative to this order, which he described as "chaos," and called for the upholding of international order in various global conflicts.
Angolan President and AU Chair Joao Lourenco reflected on Africa's historical ties with the former Soviet Union, acknowledging its support for African liberation movements during the Cold War. He expressed Africa's gratitude to Russia for its contribution to the continent's independence and emphasized the importance of national freedom, independence, and sovereignty. On the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Lourenco stated that Africa stands for justice and principles, supporting Ukraine's right to independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The African Union-European Union Summit concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration, with leaders delivering closing remarks and announcing that the next summit will be held in Europe in 2028. The declaration called for the reform of international institutions to tackle global, regional, and national challenges, reiterating the commitment to UN Charter principles such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence. It urged all nations to avoid the threat or use of force in international relations.
The leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for a just and lasting peace in conflict zones including Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, South Sudan, Congo, the Sahel region, and Somalia. The summit also agreed on strengthening cooperation in areas like peace and security, climate action, economic relations, safe migration, and youth empowerment through education and entrepreneurship programs. Lourenco highlighted that effective multilateralism remains the best hope for achieving a more just, balanced, peaceful, and prosperous world.
