Washington: Several leading congressional Democrats have voiced strong criticism of the Trump administration's latest national security strategy, arguing that it prioritizes the president's business interests over the nation's global standing and security.
According to Anadolu Agency - English, the newly released 33-page strategy emphasizes the expansion of US military presence in the Western Hemisphere, a rebalancing of global trade, and the strengthening of border security. However, it has drawn significant backlash for its perceived prioritization of personal business interests over national and international commitments.
Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona took to US social media company X to express his concerns, stating, "Donald Trump's National Security Strategy puts his family's and friends' business interests with our adversaries, like Russia and China, over promises to our allies." He warned that if implemented, the plan would weaken US influence globally and compromise national security.
The strategy has also been criticized for its controversial perspectives on Europe, suggesting that the continent faces the risk of "civilizational erasure" within the next two decades. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen remarked that it abandons the principle of supporting freedom and human rights globally, instead favoring authoritarian leaders who allegedly benefit the Trump family's interests.
Colorado Congressman Jason Crow added that the strategy could be "catastrophic" for America's global standing and safety, asserting that the approach would render the country "smaller, weaker, and vulnerable." He pledged resistance against what he perceives as a detrimental plan.
Furthermore, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, criticized the strategy for being "riddled with contradictions." She emphasized the necessity of strong leadership to ensure security and prosperity by strengthening NATO, countering Russian aggression in Ukraine, and competing with China. Shaheen argued that the current strategy has isolated the US on the world stage, negatively impacted the economy, increased costs for Americans, alienated allies, and emboldened adversaries.
