Jerusalem: Israeli President Isaac Herzog has publicly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's appeal for a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is embroiled in a corruption trial. Herzog addressed the matter, emphasizing the independent functioning of Israel's legal institutions.

According to Anadolu Agency - English, Herzog confirmed receiving a pardon request from Netanyahu, currently under review by the Justice Ministry and his legal advisors. Herzog described the request as extraordinary, emphasizing his responsibility to consider the best interest of the Israeli people.

Herzog acknowledged his appreciation for Trump's friendship and views but reiterated that Israel operates as a sovereign nation with a respected legal system. He reassured that Israel's relationship with the U.S. and Trump remains strong, cautioning against extreme interpretations of the situation.

Herzog also touched on Israel's upcoming elections, identifying the future relationship with the Palestinians as a pivotal issue. Meanwhile, Israeli prosecutors resumed questioning Netanyahu regarding the corruption charges, marking the second hearing since Netanyahu's pardon request.

Netanyahu, who denies any wrongdoing, submitted the request amidst a divided public opinion. By Israeli law, a presidential pardon requires an admission of guilt, which Netanyahu has not provided.

Additionally, Netanyahu faces serious international legal challenges, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which have resulted in substantial civilian casualties since October 2023.
