Cairo: China and Germany engaged in discussions about bilateral ties, the Nexperia chipmaker case, and economic relationships with the European Union during the visit of German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to Beijing. The meeting was part of Wadephul's two-day visit, marking his first official trip to China since assuming office.
According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions took place with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, Trade Minister Wang Wentao, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. China emphasized the importance of Germany respecting the one-China principle and expressed the need for enhanced communication and cooperation to elevate the China-Germany strategic partnership.
Vice President Han highlighted the significance of China and Germany as key economic partners and advocated for mutually beneficial cooperation. He reiterated the importance of the Taiwan question to China and encouraged Germany to support the healthy development of China-EU relations. Wadephul expressed his appreciation for the dialogue with Han through posts on the social media platform X.
In discussions with Trade Minister Wang Wentao, Wadephul sought balanced economic relations with China. The Chinese Commerce Ministry urged German firms to explore new opportunities and expand into emerging sectors while ensuring a fair environment for Chinese companies. It was noted that China is addressing Germany's concerns about Nexperia and export controls, with export license exemptions being issued for Nexperia chips.
The Chinese trade minister emphasized the need for the Dutch government to eliminate administrative interventions, stabilize the semiconductor supply chain, and mitigate risks to global industries. Germany expressed its willingness to collaborate with China on long-term solutions regarding these issues.
During the meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, China underscored the benefits of Germany-China cooperation and proposed building a stable policy framework. The importance of the one-China principle was reiterated as a foundational aspect of China-Germany relations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian described the relationship between China and Germany as a comprehensive strategic partnership. He stated that China is committed to working with Germany to enhance strategic communication and promote the development of bilateral relations.
Wadephul's visit follows a postponed trip in October due to unconfirmed meetings in China. Germany and China have maintained diplomatic relations since 1972, with China being Germany's second-largest trading partner for goods in 2024, accounting for trade worth £246 billion ($283 billion).
