Berlin: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the question of territory remains 'an extremely painful issue' for Ukraine, following talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as Kyiv continues negotiations with the US and European partners on a possible path toward ending the war.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy spoke after a meeting in Berlin, stating that Ukraine had clearly presented its position during lengthy discussions with a US delegation led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, an unofficial advisor to President Donald Trump. He emphasized that Kyiv's views must be respected in any potential agreement.
Zelenskyy clarified the nature of talks with the US delegation, expressing respect for the US as a strategic partner. He noted that the US did not impose demands but rather served as a mediator to convey Ukraine's position to the Russian side. The territorial concessions to Russia were discussed, with Zelenskyy reiterating that Ukraine's stance on this issue is 'very clear' and must be honored in any agreement.
Highlighting the sensitivity of the territorial question, Zelenskyy underscored its centrality to Ukraine's concerns. Although Russia has its own demands, he stressed the non-negotiable nature of Ukraine's position regarding its territorial integrity.
Zelenskyy acknowledged Germany's role as a key supporter of Ukraine, expressing gratitude to Chancellor Merz for the close coordination. He emphasized the importance of security guarantees, which are crucial not only for Ukraine but also for Europe.
The Ukrainian president mentioned that talks with the US representatives extended over several hours across two days and are still ongoing, characterizing them as 'very fact-based.' He mentioned that Washington is expected to propose steps to facilitate consensus, while Ukraine remains committed to working 'fairly and constructively.'
Zelenskyy also highlighted cooperation with Germany on various fronts, including reconstruction, energy, air defense, and defense-related industries such as drone production. He stated that these joint projects aim to bolster both Ukraine and Europe.
