Ankara: Six universities from Trkiye have been recognized among the world's top 100 greenest institutions in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University rankings, which assess sustainability performance across 1,745 universities spanning 105 countries.

According to Anadolu Agency, a total of 54 Turkish universities placed within the global top 500, while 97 institutions from Trkiye were ranked in the top 1,000. Notably, Istanbul Technical University secured the 25th position globally, with Yildiz Technical University, also in Istanbul, coming in at 48th, both marking their places in the prestigious top 50 list.

Erciyes University ranked 66th, Ege University 83rd, Ozyegin University 89th, and Yeditepe University 91st, rounding out Trkiye's representation in the top 100. These achievements underscore the country's commitment to sustainability in higher education.

The Council of Higher Education (YOK) attributed these successes to the initiatives under the Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project, which played a crucial role in enhancing the universities' performance. The program focuses on improving energy efficiency and promoting environmentally friendly practices across campuses.

Erol Ozvar, the head of the council, emphasized the pioneering role of universities in green transformation, highlighting a comprehensive approach that includes infrastructure, energy efficiency, water and waste management, and public transportation.

The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, is the first global ranking system dedicated solely to sustainability in higher education. It evaluates institutions based on criteria such as green infrastructure, environmental policies, resource management, and efforts to reduce ecological footprints.
