Brussels: France's foreign minister has praised the European Union's recent decision to provide a $105 billion loan package to Ukraine, calling it a 'historic' move that marks a significant step in Europe's commitment to its own security amidst ongoing tensions with Russia.

According to Anadolu Agency, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized the significance of the agreement on a social media platform, highlighting Europe's proactive stance in ensuring regional security. He remarked, "Historic. Europe agrees on a joint loan: 90 billion euros to be lent to Ukraine to help it resist Russian aggression. With European security at stake, we are taking our destiny into our own hands."

The agreement was reached at the European Council after weeks of intense negotiations between EU leaders. The loan will be financed through capital market borrowing, with funds earmarked for 2026 and 2027. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that this decision came after member states were unable to reach a consensus on using frozen Russian assets to assist Kyiv.
