Ankara: Turksat 5B, Turkiye's fifth-generation communications satellite, has successfully completed four years in orbit, according to the country's Transportation and Infrastructure Minister. The satellite, which is operated by Turkiye's sole satellite provider, has greatly enhanced the nation's communications capacity since its launch.
According to Anadolu Agency, Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu highlighted the significant role of Turksat 5B in boosting Turkiye's space and communications capabilities. Launched on December 19, 2021, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the satellite began its operational duties on June 14, 2022, following extensive testing and orbital travel. The project was initiated under a contract between Turksat, Airbus Defense and Space, and SpaceX, which covered satellite delivery, launch services, and comprehensive training programs.
The satellite, integrating Turkish technologies, has been pivotal in advancing the country's space ecosystem and data capacity. Designed to operate for about 15 years with its fully electric propulsion system, Turksat 5B is classified as a high-efficiency satellite, offering substantially greater capacity efficiency than typical Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) class satellites. It provides a robust communications infrastructure for maritime, aviation, public communications, and disaster management sectors, enhancing broadband satellite data and Internet connectivity across the region.
Uraloglu emphasized that Turksat 5B has enabled Turkiye to extend commercial services across a vast region, contributing significantly to both domestic and international communications infrastructure. It set the stage for the development of Turksat 6A, Turkiye's first homegrown communications satellite, and expanded the capacity alongside Turksat 3A and 4A satellites.
The experience from Turksat 5B has been instrumental in guiding subsequent projects, including the ongoing Turksat 7A initiative, which aims to meet critical national security, disaster management, and digitalization needs. Throughout the year, Turksat 5B facilitated numerous deals and collaborations, particularly in the Middle Eastern and African markets, securing a strong regional presence through its capacity sales and reliable service offerings.
Turkiye's satellite operator has also signed cooperation agreements with China's Chinasat and Spacesail to jointly develop and market technologies in in-flight connectivity, maritime communications, and disaster communications. Additionally, a partnership with international satellite operator Intersputnik was established to broaden global satellite cooperation and enhance service offerings. A notable collaboration with Avanti Communications aims to reinforce South Africa's communications infrastructure using Turksat 5B's broadband data and Internet services.
